Administering NetIM : Overriding element names

Overriding element names
NetIM supports the ability to override default naming for devices, interfaces, groups, sites, and links. To configure custom display names, choose Configure > All Settings > Organize > Element Naming.
The Element Naming feature allows you to specify a system-provided object attribute or a user-defined custom attribute to be used for displaying the object’s name in most views. From the Element Naming page, you can override the default naming and chose you own naming. You can also select both a user-defined custom attribute and a system-defined attribute.
Devices that do not have the user-defined custom attribute “My Device Name” set are displayed by their access address in the Search page.
The At-a-Glance pages appear with devices displayed by their access addresses.
If the user-defined custom attribute and system-defined attribute you have chosen in the Element Naming page are both blank, then the default naming attribute will be used instead.
The Element Naming attributes you chose will be resolved and you will see a new object attribute in every object’s Browse tab.
The displayName attribute is also used to identify the object when NetIM sends alerts. Additionally, this new attribute, displayName, is provided to Alluvio Portal as a new property that can be used by Portal for displaying objects provided by NetIM.
